Stay-at-Home Tree Planting

Brunei Darussalam, Tuesday, 9 November 2021.

In support of His Majesty's Government's efforts to achieve the target of planting 500,000 new trees by 2035, Green Brunei in collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation is holding a "Stay-at-Home Tree Planting" campaign. The campaign is supported by the Brunei Climate Change Secretariat, Forestry Department, Youth and Sports Department, and the Brunei Youth Council.

A total of 685 saplings consisting of Szgium Oleina and also several types of fruit trees were distributed to the public through a drive-thru method held at the Anggerek Desa Swimming Pool, Tutong Youth Center and also Green Depot in Kuala Belait from 1 - 6 November. Volunteers for tree planting activities consist of students from primary schools to higher learning institutions, youths with disabilities as well as various individuals from the government, private sector and the public. This activity is also supporting the Day of Action Campaign organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

According to Legislative Council Member, Yang Berhormat Dayang Khairunnisa binti Awang Haji Ash'ari who is also the Co-Founder of Green Brunei, the sapling distribution will continue in the coming dates where the public, especially students are encouraged to participate. Green Brunei has targeted a total of 1,590 saplings to be distributed throughout the month of November.

This campaign is one of the activities organised under the Environmental Education Tour Project which aims to raise public awareness on climate change issues and also supports 4 of the strategies under the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy. Apart from tree planting activities, the project will also involve a virtual tour to Tenaga Suria Brunei and Seria Energy Lab. In addition, several competitions for school students will also be organized by the Ministry of Education with the theme “climate change”.
