Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) and the U.S. Embassy Bangkok are pleased to invite young leaders from the ASEAN region and Timor-Leste, aged 18-35 years to attend “YSEALI Enviro-Tech Regional Workshop 2023 - Advancing Technology for Sustainable Future.” Which will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on June 12-17, 2023.

The workshop will see participants engage in and discuss issues focusing on combating climate change through the practical application of innovative clean technologies. Participants will apply guidance and experience gained from experts, training, and site visits to reflect and discuss how environmental issues are being tackled – along with how it applies and can be solved in their own country through regional cooperation.

The theme for our 5th Conference is deemed critical for the ASEAN region as it is identified that the effort again COVID-19 requires coordinated actions within the region with ASEAN's partners. Therefore, the 5th AUSCU propose the theme "Youth Engagement: Prosperity of ASEAN in the Next-Normal".

This is also in accordance with the theme of Brunei ASEAN Chairmanship 2020, “We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper”, which highlights the decisive role of solidarity and unity in maintaining ASEAN's sustainability.

The objectives of the 5th Conference are as follows:

  1. To formulate ideas on how youth engagement and role can assist ASEAN in achieving sustainable development and assuring ASEAN youth preparedness for the new normal.

  2. To instill universal principles in youth leaders' which will pave the road for youth's contribution in the post-COVID-19 era.

  3. To offer a platform for ASEAN youth to exchange experiences, views, ideas, and opportunities to improve their own capacities.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

The person interested shall meet the following criteria:

  1. Student leaders with ASEAN nationality from respective ASEAN Member States university and college;

  2. Aged between 17 - 28 years old;

  3. Commitment to attend all of the sessions/ activities;

THE US-ASEAN WOMEN IN SCIENCE PRIZE 2021

Deadline: 15th March 2021 | the 2021 Underwriters Laboratories-ASEAN-U.S. Science Prize for Women will focus on clean water and clean air which are not limited to access to clean & safe water and air pollution only, but also emphasize how science, technology and innovation can bring about positive outcomes and by improving water or air quality for ASEAN.

The prize contest is open to female applicants in two categories (Mid-career and Senior Scientists) who are engaged in research related to the clean water and clean air in the region and who are role models for other women working in and pursuing careers in STEM fields.

Applications are welcome from researchers or lecture in universities or research institutes as well as from scientists / researchers / experts / technologists / innovators from governmental bodies and private sector or even any environmental activists from Civil Society Organizations (CSO) or Non-Government Organizations (NGO).

In order to participate in this Prize, applicants must meet the following criteria.

  • Female professional working in applied science

  • Citizen of an ASEAN Member State (AMS) include: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

  • Holder a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree. Applicant who is candidate for, or in process of pursuing a PhD or doctoral degree are not eligible.

  • To qualify for the Mid-career Scientist category, the applicant must be 45 years or below on the closing date of the application period.

  • To qualify for the Senior Scientist category, the applicant must be aged 46 or older on the closing date of the application period.

Academician / researcher / innovator / technologist / expert / practitioner / activist in this year’s theme of clean water and clean air.

Deadline: 12th March 2020 | Age 9-25 | The Diana Award is bestowed upon inspiring, courageous, compassionate young people, positively transforming the lives of others in Diana, Princess of Wales’ memory and legacy. Nominators must know the young person in a professional capacity, i.e. teacher, youth worker. Nominations made by family members will not be accepted.

Successful UK based nominees will be invited to attend an Award Ceremony near their local area, where their achievement will be celebrated alongside their peers.

Successful international nominees will be celebrated virtually on our International Ceremony Day which takes place on International #YouthDay on 12th August 2020.

Both UK based and international recipients of The Diana Award are also eligible for The Legacy Award, which takes place on a biennial basis. The next Legacy Award ceremony will take place in 2021.

2ND ASEAN YOUTH SOCIAL JOURNALISM CONTEST 2021

Deadline: 14th February 2021 | Age 18-30 | Talented ASEAN youth are invited to share and promote fact-based and compelling messages showcasing the importance of ASEAN youth at the forefront of efforts to combat the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The 2nd ASEAN Youth Social Journalism Contest 2021 is inviting youth “Social Journalists” to submit an essay and campaign ideas describing a theme of ASEAN Youth and COVID-19 ─ Response, Recovery, and Resilience.

ASEAN youth will have to look beyond themselves and work together across borders to build a stronger and more cohesive community of nations in response to the global pandemic.

Based on the essay submissions,  up to 20 youth from 10 ASEAN Member States will participate in a virtual workshop to develop and implement a social awareness activity in their respective countries.

This contest is endorsed by the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Youth (SOMY) and supported by the ASEAN Foundation, ASEAN Secretariat, Ireland Embassy, and the ASEAN-USAID PROSPECT, a joint project of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and U.S. State Department.

Who can apply?

  1. Any existing or aspiring social journalist that holds an ASEAN Member States passport (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam) and resides in the country of citizenship. Note: professional journalists who are full-time employees of established media outlets are not eligible to participate).

  2. The interested ASEAN youths are required to form a team of two from the same nationalities. The applicants must be between 18 and 30 years of age on 26 April 2021.

  3. Selected finalists must be able to communicate fluently in both spoken and written English.

  4. Selected finalists must have active Facebook and Gmail accounts for ease of communication with the trainer and other participants.

Application process and evaluation criteria

A selected panel of judges will evaluate your essay submission. The selection criteria are outlined below:

  1. Clarity of ideas: The essay clearly demonstrates an understanding of the theme and why it is important to youth in ASEAN Community.

  2. Originality and creativity: The content is unique and written in a creative and compelling way with a thoughtful approach from the youth perspective.

  3. Potential reader impact: The essay conveys personal or aspirational thoughts that are inspiring to viewers.

Following the evaluation process, ten teams consist of 20 finalists (two from each ASEAN Member State) will be selected to participate in a virtual social journalism workshop in April 2021.

What to expect in the workshop?

  1. During the workshop, each country team will develop one agreed upon activity proposal to raise the awareness and address the above-mentioned theme related to ASEAN and in their home country and pitch this proposal to the trainer and judges.

  2. The trainer and judges will evaluate the proposal pitches and provide feedback to the finalists.

What happens after the workshop?

Following the workshop, each team will receive a stipend and be required to implement their proposed activity to attract public engagement. Following the evaluation, the top three teams will be announced to receive cash prizes to support the sustainability of the activity.

Deadline: 5th February 2021 | Supporting dynamic, collaborative, rising leaders from the United States and around the world in an innovative one-year academic and leadership experience.

The Obama Foundation Scholars Program will give rising leaders from the United States and around the world who are already making a difference in their communities the opportunity to take their work to the next level through an immersive curriculum that brings together academic, skills-based, and hands-on learning. The Scholars Program empowers individuals with a proven commitment to service with the tools they need to make their efforts more effective, to identify innovative solutions to complex global problems, and promote change through values-based leadership.

The program will build lasting relationships among emerging leaders who are committed to working together to solve the most pressing challenges of our time, thereby creating a global network that reaches across issues and borders. After completing the program, Obama Foundation Scholars will return to work on their global issue of focus and implement their personalized action plan to accelerate positive change within their community. They will also have an opportunity to play a role in the Obama Foundation’s efforts to inspire, train, and connect rising leaders from around the globe.

Note: While their hope is that the 2021-22 Obama Foundation Scholars at Columbia University will reside on-site in the City of New York, there is a possibility Scholars will participate in the program remotely from their home countries and communities, due to COVID-19. 

Scholars participate in an immersive program that brings together academic, skills-based and experiential learning, designed by Columbia University in consultation with the Obama Foundation. In addition to the activities taking place on the Columbia campus, the Obama Foundation offers a robust curriculum of leadership development, hands-on training, networking activities, and mentorship throughout the academic year to help the Obama Scholars gain the real-world skills, tools, and experiences they need to expand the impact of their work when they return home.

 Key components of the program include: 

  • A Weekly Seminar that runs the length of the academic year, exploring questions in tandem with key global trends including inequality, technological developments, the diffusion of power, population movements, and climate change.

  • Personal and Professional Development Workshops designed to strengthen practical skills to enhance Scholars’ ability to lead. Previous workshop topics include conflict management and resolution, public speaking, data analysis and interpretation, and resilience.

  • An Experiential Learning component that engages Scholars in the work of Columbia World Projects.

  • Audited Coursework that provides Scholars with the flexibility to select and enroll in up to two graduate level courses each semester at Columbia.

  • A Thought Leadership Speaker Series that introduces Scholars to seasoned practitioners from the NGO community, and philanthropic, governmental, and international organizations to expand Scholars’ networks and perspectives to help advance their work.

  • Partnership with a Columbia faculty adviser selected for their subject matter expertise to provide Scholars with new insights and perspectives to inform Scholars’ work.

  • Meaningful opportunities for Scholars to contribute to the intellectual life of the campus and gain exposure to different perspectives by engaging with the Columbia University community.

4TH ASEF YOUNG LEADERS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT

Deadline: 3rd February 2021 | Age 18-30 | The 4th ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS4) is a fully-funded 10-month long youth leadership programme connected to the 13th ASEM Summit (ASEM13) in June 2021 in Cambodia.

The ASEFYLS4 programme consists of 3 phases:

  1. Knowledge Building: Monday, 22 February 2021 – 28 May 2021, Virtual
    We invite youth to an in-depth knowledge journey and peer-to-peer exploration into Asia-Europe Relations, the Sustainable Development Goals and Leadership with a certified course and training led by the College of Europe in Natolin and the Center for Creative Leadership respectively. Besides focus group discussions & youth collaboration, the highlights of this phase will be Youth Dialogues with ASEM Heads of States and Governments led by ASEFYLS4 representatives. See the programme for more details.

  2. Youth Summit: Saturday, 29 May 2021 – Wednesday, 2 June 2021, Cambodia/Virtual
    The virtual or hybrid Youth Summit will take place in conjunction with the 13th ASEM Summit in Cambodia, pending local and international public health & safety guidelines, as well as travel recommendations.
    Youth will have the opportunity to deepen their networks and conversations, and also prepare an ASEM Youth Declaration that will be presented by ASEFYLS4 participants at the Opening Ceremony of the 13th ASEM Summit to the ASEM Leaders. Engagement with ASEM Leaders and their Delegations are planned.

  3. Leadership in Action: June – November 2021, Virtual & in local ASEM communities
    During this phase, participants will turn theory into action, and jointly work on 15 impactful, community projects on the Sustainable Development Goals across ASEM. See here for more details on the projects.

  • Strong verbal and written command of English

Selection criteria:
When assessing the applications, ASEF and its partners will lay extra weight on the:

  • Originality of the motivational statement

  • Contribution with knowledge and/or skills to the Leadership in Action Projects.

  • Proven experience with and/or expressed interest in Asia-Europe relations

  • Current or past extra-curricular (and/or professional) activities that are both relevant for the overall programme and that could enrich the diversity of expertise and perspectives of the overall participant group.

LIVINGSTON YOUNG JOURNALISM AWARDS 2021

Deadline: 2nd February 2021 | Age <35 | The Livingston Awards for Young Journalists were established in 1981 to recognize outstanding reporting and bolster the careers of journalists under the age of 35.

Each year, prizes of $10,000 each are presented in local, national and international reporting. Winners are selected by the panel of judges, who share a long-time commitment to the program and are highly respected for their achievements in journalism.

The Livingston Awards invites print, online, video, audio and data visualization entries.

Winning the award helps talented young reporters develop the confidence and the institutional backing to continue producing ambitious projects. National recognition leads winners to new stories, new audiences and new career opportunities. The distinguished names of past winners include David Remnick, Christiane Amanpour, Ira Glass, Michelle Norris and Steve Coll.

Rules

  • Entrants must be 34 years of age or younger as of December 31, 2020.

  • Multiple bylines are eligible, but all must meet the age criteria.

  • One entry per individual is accepted. One entry can be a single piece or a maximum of three pieces either from a published series, an original piece and its follow-up developments or three pieces clearly tied together in a beat. All pieces of the series must be published by the same organization.

  • There is no limit to the number of entries that a media organization can submit, provided that they enter only one entry per reporter.

  • Individuals may apply on their own, or be entered by their organization.

  • Print, online, video, audio and data visualization work is eligible. Still photography is not eligible.

  • The work must appear in U.S. controlled media. Entrants are not required to be U.S. citizens.

  • Entries must be directly related to current events or include new information about old events. Features and commentary are eligible.

  • Submissions must consist of materials prepared in the ordinary course of the journalist’s professional production. Materials prepared by journalists specifically for submission to the Livingston Awards do not qualify.

  • Student media are not eligible.

  • Competition is limited to work published or appearing during the calendar year ending December 31, 2020.

  • Winners will participate in an outreach event arranged by the Livingston Awards.

  • Finalists will be notified by April 1, 2021 and announced later that month. Announcement of winners will take place in June.

FUTURE WORKFORCE YSEALI WORKSHOP 2021

Deadline: 1st February 2021 | Age 20-35 | Are you interested in how rapid technology and digital advances are altering the context of work in Asia and globally? If so, you’re invited to apply for the 2021 YSEALI Workshop on Future Workforce!

The U.S. Embassy in Singapore, in partnership with the Asia Foundation, will host this 8-day virtual workshop from May 16 – 23rd.

They are looking for actively engaged students, entrepreneurs, or young professionals interested in the future of work and the challenges and opportunities presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Applicants must be:

  • YSEALI Member (Join YSEALI now)

  • Ages between 18 – 35 years old (at the time of application and workshop)

  • Citizen of one of the following countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Vietnam

  • Currently residing in one of the following countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Vietnam

  • Have at least 2 years of work experience

  • Passionate about building communities and have a keen interest in building a network through collaboration and partnership with other Southeast Asian countries

  • Fluent in written and spoken English

  • Will commit to a minimum of 36 hours of virtual/online sessions from the workshop agenda

The program, arranged in partnership with the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore will connect 60 participants from across ASEAN and showcase innovative approaches to leveraging the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR); explore 4IR challenges and opportunities and how they impact the future of work; and allow participants to connect with peers and leading experts.

Participants will gain an understanding of how rapid technology and digital advances are altering the context of work in Asia and globally; receive mentorship; explore opportunities to expand their work; exchange ideas on how to foster economic growth in their communities; and discover avenues for stronger regional cooperation and cooperation between the U.S. and ASEAN.
